Dr. Hesung Chun Koh is recognized as the first Korean-American recipient of the prestigious Outstanding American by Choice (ABC) Award
We are extremely excited and proud to announce that Dr. Hesung C. Koh, co-founder, and Chair of East Rock Institute, was honored as an Outstanding American by Choice on July 19, 2016 at a Special Naturalization Ceremony held at Woolsey Hall, Yale University, New Haven, CT. Over 2,000 individuals were in attendance, including 488 newly sworn- in U.S. citizens originally from 80 countries. Dignitaries in attendance included Senator Richard Blumenthal of CT, Deirdre Daly. U.S. Attorney for District of CT, the Honorable Joan Margolis, U.S. Magistrate Judge, and Juliet Choi, Chief of Staff, USCIS.
Each year, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Department of Homeland Security recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to both their community and the United States. Dr. Koh is the first Korean-American recipient to receive this honor due to her life’s work bridging East and West through her scholarship, teaching, and mentorship, both at Yale and through her work at East Rock Institute.
USCIS has recognized more than 120 individuals since the inception of the initiative. Past ABC recipients including:
- Madeleine Albright, Former U.S. Secretary of State (Czechoslovakia)
- Khaled Hosseini, Author of The Kite Runnerand A Thousand Splendid Suns (Afghanistan)
- Gerda Weissmann Klein, Founder of Citizenship Counts; Holocaust survivor and human rights activist (Poland) and many more ……
